Southampton Memorial Wall
Those who attend the annual Service of Remembrance or who pass the Cenotaph will know that because of weather damage the inscribed names are becoming unreadable. Because of the structure of the cenotaph restoration is not an option. It is also a fact that the Cenotaph only records the names of those servicemen killed in action in the First World War.

The city council has therefore proposed that we should construct a wall of remembrance alongside the cenotaph with sufficient space to record the names of all who have died on active service in both world wars and on the more recent conflicts such as the Falkland.
The full details of the proposal are available on the City Website.
The City Council is able to contribute £50,000 but the Royal British Legion and the Chamber of Commerce believe that the remaining £70,000 should be raised by public subscription as our way of acknowledging on an individual and personal basis the debt that each one of us owes to those who died in our name.
The Chamber is acting on behalf of the Royal British Legion to collect donations and we are therefore asking all Chamber members to pledge to attempt to raise a sum of £1 from each of their employees.
Companies that give the undertaking will be featured on the Chamber website and in the Chamber’s Business magazine and those who successfully raise the target sum will be featured again in a special issue to celebrate the completion of the Wall.
Chamber members can register and make the commitment on line by
